Burkholder was last seen at her home in Fredericksburg, Virginia on December 27, 1992. Her husband was the last person to see her. He stated she packed a suitcase and some clothes and left their apartment sometime after 11:00 p.m., while everyone else was asleep. She has never been heard from again. She was reported missing by out-of-state relatives in early January 1993. Burkholder left behind two young daughters.
